Day 2 (Monday) 07.23.2007

ACCRA
Today we will continue to explore Accra including a visit to a local casket making shop to see a collection of caskets carved in the shape of different objects, depicting traditional beliefs in life after death. The “Fantasy Coffins” of Teshie Nungua have been featured in National Geographic and can be found in museums and galleries worldwide.

Day 3 (Tuesday) 07.24.2007

ACCRA/MAMPONG/KUMASI
After breakfast we depart to Mampong Center for Research into Plant Medicine and Herbal Research Center. You will get an insight into the treatment of Diabetes and high blood pressure using traditional medicine. Continue to Tetteh Quarshie Cocoa Farm, the first commercial Cocoa farm in Ghana. You will touch the actual Cocoa pods. Cocoa is Ghana's largest export and is used to blend some of the world's finest chocolates. Continue to Kumasi, the realm of the Ashanti Kingdom of gold.

Day 4 (Wednesday) 07.25.2007

KUMASI
After breakfast continue your tour of Kumasi, the Capital of the Ashanti Kingdom. Visit Manhyia Palace and Museum where you will learn the history of the Ashantis. Visit the home of Nana Yaa Asantewaa, the legendary female general who led Ashanti Armies against British Forces in 1900. This afternoon depart to Buabeng Fiema where sacred monkeys live in harmony with the community. You will have the chance to play with the monkeys.

Day 5 (Thursday) 07.26.2007

KUMASI
After breakfast we will visit the Kumasi Central Market, the largest open-air market in West Africa, where more than 10.000 traders ply their wares. Continue with visits to the Ashanti craft villages starting with the Woodcarving Village of Ahwiaa, known for the talented craftsmen who fashion royal stools, walking sticks and fertility dolls. Our second stop is the village of Ntonso where Artisans hand-stamp patterns on cotton cloth to make Adinkra textiles that are worn for funerals and other solemn occasions. Our third village is Bonwire where the famous Kente cloth is handmade on looms, in a time-honored tradition passed down through generations.

KUMASI/CAPE COAST
This morning we will visit three craft villages- Pankrono (pottery), Ahwiaa (woodcarving), and Ntonso (adinkra) cloth. Visit the Kumasi Cultural Center. This afternoon we will depart to Cape Coast, arriving early evening.

CAPE COAST-ELMINA
Today you will experience the grand opening of PANAFEST, 2007. The grand opening includes: Durbar/Grand Procession of Chiefs, traditional rulers, and Queen Mothers. Eminent personalities, Pan Africanists and artists in a royal display of pageantry.

Day 9 (Monday) 07.30.2007

CAPE COAST - ELMINA
African scholars and Activist Conference on Pan Africanism. Afternoon escorted tours. This afternoon we will visit (Elmina Castle) Fort Sao Jorge de Elmina – the site of the first European contact with West Africa when the Portuguese landed here in 1471. Elmina Castle, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, was built in 1482 and is the first European structure in sub-Saharan Africa. The castle was also used as a Slave Prison. In the evening attend PANAFEST activities.

Day 10 (Tuesday) 07.31.2007

CAPE COAST - ELMINA
Day tour of Cape Coast and vicinity including the “ Slave River” at Assin Manso, the burial site of two former slaves from the U. S. and Jamaica whose remains were re-interred in August 1998 during Ghana's first Emancipation Day Celebration. We will visit the “Slave River” where captured Africans had their last bath before being confined in the Slave Castles to await shipment to the Americas.

This afternoon we will visit Cape Coast Castle and the Castle Museum for a guided tour. Cape Coast Castle is another restored UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Castle was one of the embarkation points for Africans being shipped to slavery in the Americas. Cape Coast was the capitol of Ghana during the Colonial Era.

In the evening, attend PANAFEST activities

Day 11 (Wednesday) 08.01.2007

CAPE COAST/ADA FOAH/ACCRA
Travel to the coastal area where the Volta river meets the sea at Ada Foah. You will pass through remote villages where we will make brief stops. Villages include: Nkawkaw, Koforidua, Somanya, Afienya and Dawenya. Late evening return to Accra.
